If you move within the Netherlands, you must inform your new municipality of your change of address, either in person, in writing, or online. Your new municipality will update your address in the Personal Records Database (BRP). It is mandatory to inform the municipality anywhere between four weeks prior to moving and five days after moving. Usually, the moving date you provide will be treated as the day on which your address changed. However, if you don't notify the municipality on time, the date on which you report the move will be treated as the moving date. Take care, as municipalities can impose a fine of up to €325 if you do not inform them in time of important changes to your personal information.

Documents required

To inform your new municipality of your change of address, a few documents will be required:

  • A valid identity document, either a passport, driver's licence, Dutch ID, or residence permit card.

  • Proof of occupancy, such as a rental contract in your name or a purchase deed. Or a written and signed consent form from the property’s main occupant, along with their proof of identity, if you are going to live with someone else.

In most cases, it will take a couple of (business) days before the change of address is completely processed. If you have a DigiD, you can log in to your new municipality's website or MijnOverheid to see if the change has been registered in good order.

When your new municipality registers your change of address, a number of other governmental agencies, such as the Tax and Customs Administration, pension funds, and health insurance providers, will be notified automatically. Your previous municipality will then de-register you, too. Should you wish to inform others of your change of address, then it is possible to have PostNL notify businesses and organisations on your behalf, or to forward your physical mail to your new address. Make sure to notify your bank and your employer, also, and to inform your general practitioner and dentist.

Finally, if you have a parking permit for your previous municipality, make sure to double-check if this needs to be terminated separately. Once your move has been registered, you can apply for a new permit connected to your new address.
