DigiD and MijnOverheid

In the Netherlands, having a DigiD will help you arrange your affairs online, such as your taxes, health insurance, and your pension fund.

A DigiD is a digital identity which allows you to identify yourself when making arrangements online. Nearly all governmental agencies use DigiD as an easy and secure log-in method. Likewise, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and your pension fund may ask you to use DigiD to log in and access your personal data.

Applying for a DigiD is easy and straight-forward. You will need the following:

  • Your citizen service number (BSN).

  • Your registered address in the Netherlands.

  • A mobile phone.

The process can be started online, after which you will receive a letter with an activation code by post. You will receive this letter within three business days on the address where you are registered. Make sure you remember your username and password, because you will need them to activate and use your DigiD.

You can use DigiD in different ways. Sometimes, logging in with a username and password is sufficient. However, more and more organisations require you to use your phone to log in, either through the DigiD application or an SMS verification code.

MijnOverheid and Message Box

With a DigiD, you can also start using MijnOverheid and Message Box. MijnOverheid is a website for all your dealings with governmental agencies. It shows you the personal data registered with the Dutch authorities and how to report any changes in this information. On MijnOverheid, you’ll also find your private Message Box (in Dutch: Berichtenbox), a digital mailbox where you can receive messages from the Dutch authorities. This is especially useful to remain connected to the IND, in case you are expecting news about your residence permit application or extension, for instance.

If you are using MijnOverheid for the first time, use your DigiD to log in and follow the instructions. You will have to enter your personal e-mail address, set your preferences to activate your account, and indicate the organisations which can send you digital mail, such as the Tax and Customs Administration or the IND. Upon receiving correspondence in your Message Box, you will receive an e-mail notification. Messages in your Message Box are always available and can be printed when you need them. Some governmental agencies will still send you physical correspondence, but not all.

Important: You can only start using a DigiD once you have received your BSN. As making use of a DigiD can significantly ease administrative arrangements in the Netherlands, it is recommended you do not delay this process.
