Introduction to social security system

Upon your arrival to Poland, you might have heard about ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych), which is a public institution taking care of the social security of Polish residents.

The social security system will cover the following:

  • Retirement insurance,

  • Life annuity (disability insurance),

  • Accident insurance,

  • Sickness insurance (which also includes maternity leave).

As a full-time employee you will receive all these benefits. Your employer will have to pay contributions on a monthly basis in order for you to be able to use the benefits in the future. These benefits are part of employer’s cost of employment.

How to enrol in social security?

Once you sign your employment contract and you start working for your employer, the employer has the obligation to declare you in the social security system (ZUS) within 7 days from the employment start date.

Any time that you go to the doctor to receive sick leave document, this note has to be sent to your account in the social security system, so that you can receive the benefit.

How high are the contributions?

The amounts of contributions for retirement, disability, sickness and accident insurance are expressed as an interest rate and are as follows:

  • for retirement insurance - 19.52% of the gross salary (and any bonuses and additional payments paid to employee during the specific month)

  • for disability insurance - 8.00%

  • for sickness insurance - 2.45%

  • for accident insurance - 1,67%.
