‘Skilled worker’ is the overall term for people that can use their professional or academic training as a basis for their visa application.

Skilled workers with academic training have to hold a degree either completed or recognized in Germany. If the degree relates to the job title, and the salary is adequate (incl. matching a specific threshold), the applicant may apply for a Blue Card.

Skilled workers with professional training may - if they don’t match the Blue Card requirements - apply for a ‘Specialist’ visas (e.g. IT Specialist). Those applicants have to hold a certain professional experience in their field (3 years for IT specialist) and earn a certain salary. They may also be required to show proof of their experience/qualification through certificates or training courses.
