Most embassies require a passport to be valid for at least 6 months, and have at least 2 blank pages when someone is applying for a visa. If the passport is valid for less than 6 months, then you should definitely apply for a new passport. If your passport is expiring in a year, you can apply for the visa, enter Germany, renew the passport, and ‘transfer’ your visa/residence permit to the new passport.
