The social security number is proof of you contributing to statutory insurance schemes like pension insurance or health insurance. You can usually obtain it from your health insurance provider (it is oftentimes already written on the documents you have received from them, so feel free to double check those first. The German term is 'Sozialversicherungsnummer').
