Does my family need proof of German language skills if they are relocating with me?

Family members applying for family reunion visas usually have to present a A1 German language certificate.

However, there are some exceptions, if:

  • you are eligible for a Blue Card

  • you or your spouse are a citizen of the European Union or

  • your spouse has a university degree and probably will be able to find work in Germany

In the first exception, family members may need to present a copy of the Blue Card to show that the main applicant has received one, so best they take that copy with them to their appointment
