After arriving in Switzerland you will have to visit the local authority to do the address registration. At this registration appointment you also apply for the residence permit card at the same time (2in1 process). However, in most cantons you will need to attend the office a few weeks later again to submit your biometrics (fingerprints). The costs depend on the canton as well and are generally between 40 and 100 CHF.

At the initial appointment you will already get the appointment for the biometrics. After the biometrics appointment the residence card will be ready in approx. 2-4 weeks.

All instructions are given at the initial appointment about when and how you will receive the card.

All cantons operate slightly different (in some it is not necessary to book an appointment in advance but the office can be visited without an appointment).
