Applicants of the EU Blue Card or the RWR Card can bring their family dependents on a family visa to Austria.

Family members (spouse, registered partners, unmarried children) receive a RWR Card - plus with free access to the labor market. Family members of employee's holding the RWR Card for other key personnel, graduate students, or workers in shortage occupations have to prove their knowledge of German at level A1 already at the moment of filing the application (exempt are minors younger than 14 years or persons with certain previous knowledge or school-leaving certificates). Family members of holders of Blue Cards or RWR Cards for highly qualified personell do not need to proof German language skills.

NOTE: Family members are also except from the German requirement if they state that they are not planning to stay more than 24 months within a 3 years period in Austria and declare that they will not apply for a permit extension.

Family members in the sense of the Settlement and Residence Act (NAG) are

  • Spouse

  • registered partners

  • Minor unmarried children (under 18 years of age) including adopted children or step-children

Spouses and registered partners must have already reached the age of 21 at the time of application.
