After you arrive in Austria you need to register your address (Wohnsitzanmeldung). This is important because you need to be registered in order to open a bank account, get a tax ID or to do any other administrative tasks.

Registering with the registration authority: In accordance with the Austrian Registration Law, an individual is required to register with the responsible registration authority within three days after moving to the new place of residence. This registration can take place personally or per mail. If the application is send via mail, the documents need to be certified. The required form can be downloaded from the Internet at no charge. If the place of residence is being rented, the landlord also has to sign the form.

In Vienna: this is the link to the "Magistratische Bezirksamt" where the city registration has to take place.

Following documents are required for the registration: passport, visa, birth certificate, application form

The registration is free of charge. The registration can take place in any office, not necessarily the closest one.
