What type of residence permit am I eligible for?

There are different types of residence permits you can apply for. Check this page to find out which one you might be eligible for.

In Austria we distinguish between several different types of residence permits: EU Blue Card, RWR Card for very high qualified workers, RWR Card for skilled workers in shortage occupations, (Austria wide shortage occupations and regional shortage occupations), and RWR Card for other key workers. In order to assess for which card you are most suitable, you can use the point calculator which guides you through the required questions and calculates the points.

EU Blue Card

The European Blue Card is intended for employees who perform highly skilled work within the EU.

To be eligible to apply for the EU Blue Card the following conditions must be met:

  • The employment contract is for a period of at least 12 months.

  • 4.684€ gross per month for the year 2022

  • University degree (three year program) in the field of occupation

RWR Card

4 different type of RWR Cards exist:

RWR Card for very high qualified workers

Applicants are considered particularly highly qualified if they achieve at least 70 out of 100 points on the scoring system.

Note: Highly qualified persons without a job offer may also apply for a visa D at the Austrian embassy if they can provide evidence of this qualification. Once the visa D is granted the person may enter Austria for 6 months to search for employment.

RWR Card for other key workers

Talents who achieve at least 55 out of 90 points on the scoring system may obtains the RWR card as other key personnel.

Prerequisite is an offer of employment.

For key personnel under age of 30 β†’ 2.775€ gross per month

For key personnel over age of 30 β†’ 3.330€ gross per month

Note: RWR Card my be denied of a person with the same qualification is registered with the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS).

RWR Card for graduate students

University graduates who found an occupation after completing their studies in Austria corresponding to their level of education may be granted a RWR card β†’ 2.487,50€ gross per month

RWR Card for personnel in skilled labor shortage

Talents who achieve at least 55 out of 90 point on the scoring system and are trained in one of the shortage occupations may obtain the RWR Card. Prerequisite is an employment in the occupation for a wage in accordance with the Collective Agreement or the remuneration otherwise customary in this sector.
