The Personal Public Service (PPS) number is a unique reference number that helps you access social welfare benefits, public services and information in Ireland.

Once you arrive in Ireland, you should apply for the PPS number online. It is even recommended to post the application before arrival, as the processing times are approx. 1 month and your employer will ask you for your PPS number to register you in the payroll system.

Note: you need an Irish address in order to apply for your PPS number.

What is it used for?

You can use your PPS number for the following purposes:

  • All social welfare services

  • The Free Travel Pass

  • Pupil ID

  • Public health services, including the medical card and the Drugs Payment Scheme

  • Child immunisation

  • Schemes run by the Revenue Commissioners, such as mortgage interest relief

  • Housing grants

  • Driver Theory Testing and driving licences
