If you are anon-EU, non-UK citizen, you need an employment permit in order to to work in Ireland.

There are two main types of employment permits:

Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP)

To be eligible for a CSEP, the following criteria must be met:

  • Your occupation meets the minimum annual remuneration of €32,000 for a restricted number of strategically important occupations contained in the Critical Skills Occupations List.

  • You hold a relevant degree qualification or higher. If you do not have a degree qualification or higher, you must have the necessary level of experience.

  • In the case of a nurse or midwife, a third level degree or diploma accepted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as a sufficient qualification for registration to practice as a nurse or midwife in the State.

  • Your occupation meets the minimum annual remuneration of over €64,000, unless it’s on the Ineligible List of Occupations for Employment Permits or contrary to the public interest.

  • You must have secured a 2 year job offer forthe eligible occupation from the prospective employer.

  • You must possess the relevant qualifications, skills and experience that are required for the position

Is this your first employment permit in Ireland? Then you are expected to remain with your employer for 12 months (unless there are exceptional circumstances). After that you can change employers if you submit a new application for a Critical Skills Employment Permit.

General Employment Permit

To be eligible for a General Employment Permit the following criteria must be met:

  • You must meet the minimum annual remuneration (generally above €30,000)

  • Your profession cannot be in an excluded job category under the Ineligible List of Occupations for Employment Permits;

  • You must possess the relevant qualifications, skills or experience that are required for the position.

Note: Spouses, dependants or partners of General Employment Permit holders are not eligible for a Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit and must apply for a separate employment permit in their own right.
